Evolution of New York City Subways: An Illustrated History of New York City's Transit Cars, 1867-1997

NYC Subway Fan's Delight!!!
I'm a native New Yorker, born in Brooklyn and raised in Queens, so the NYC subway system means a great deal to me. I'm also a railfan, so my interests in the inner workings of the IND, BMT, and IRT run very deep as well. That's why I can say that Evolution of New York City Subways truly is a subway fan's delight. Gene Sansone has written an incredibly fact-filled, engaging chronicle of the rolling stock of the MTA and its predecessors, as only an insider can. The comprehensive text is accompanied by excellent interior and exterior photos, plus detailed diagrams and specifications. I predict that this book will soon become the reference standard on this subject. I sincerely urge all subway fans to get a copy immediately: they won't be able to put it down!

God Struck Me Dead: Voices of Ex-Slaves (The William Bradford Collection from the Pilgrim Press)
Published in Paperback by Pilgrim Pr (October, 1993)
Authors: Clifton H. Johnson and Albert J. Raboteau
Average review score:

Reveals the Reality of the Experience of the Holy Spirit
this is an amazing book, ranking up there with Buber's 'Ecstatic Confessions', Kapleau's 'Three Pillars of Zen', and the 1960's film 'Holy Ghost People', as being a valuable collection of authentic religious experience. Thankfully, African Americans have preserved the experience of the Holy Spirit described in this book in Gospel Music. The traditions described in this book deserve to be revived and preserved, i.e. 'the mourner's bench', and singing in a circle out in a field at night. It seems to me this book helps to show that we are all slaves to the world and society until freed by the holy spirit.

The Ladder of Perfection (Penguin Classics)
Published in Paperback by Penguin Books Ltd (25 October, 2001)
Authors: Walter Hilton, Leo Sherley-Price, and Clifton Wolters
Average review score:

Beginning Christianity
This is a book about a girl who is fixing to become a secluded nun. Walter Hilton is a 13 Century Mystic who is teaching her how to be a Christian. The chapters are short and to the point. He teaches her to be a christian is a very simplistic manner.

This book is truly awesome and brings up many issues inwardly about your own christianity. It also answers many issues.

The fact that this is written in the 13century makes it more awesome, because modern man does not think in simplistic terms about what Christianity is truly all about.

Living Philosophies: The Reflections of Some Eminent Men and Women of Our Time
Published in Hardcover by Doubleday (September, 1990)
Author: Clifton Fadiman
Average review score:

The Wisdom Is Here For The Reading
One problem of our age is our perpetual worship of youth, innovation, and newness. If we ever stopped long enough to ponder, it seems to be over what else we can do to bring in the New.

Mr. Fadiman has collected 36 different authors (scholars, scientists and clerics) to give us their mature wisdom on surviving--no, I mean, living, with meaning.

Read this slowly. It is a full menu of healthy food. Read it with a pencil. Then re-read it next year. Herein is the wisdom of our betters.

A Mohave War Reminiscence 1854-1880
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (August, 1994)
Authors: A. L. Kroeber and Clifton B. Kroeber
Average review score:

Exceptional
This book concerns the battles of 1884 against, first, a band of rival natives, and then against USA soldiers. While the history presented is probably slightly "re-fantasized" in the Macava tradition, the names, places, and events are probably correct to a high degree of confidence. Anyone who is interested in the history of the Yuma / Mojave / Mohave / Macava / river tribes, will probably wish to read this book. I recomend it highly!

Money Machines: The Breakdown and Reform of Governmental and Party Finance

The best.
Dr. Yearley's book is one of the best texts written on reconstruction financing. It is a wonderfully written and researched work, scholars and general readers would find it of great interest

Music and Song in Persia: The Art of Avaz
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Utah Pr (Txt) (October, 1999)
Author: Lloyd Clifton Miller
Average review score:

Comprehensive; thorough; complete
The author shares his vast knowledge of this esoteric subject. I would have liked to have seen more on the interplay of the 'ghazals' of Hafez as they relate to avaz. The role of the American Peace Corps professional musicians in Iran during the 1960s and 1970s should have been discussed.

Native American Scientists
This small book is an excellent resource for the classroom! It is written in simple language that children can understand.

Native American Scientists helps to fill the cultural void in most curriculums and provides us with a friendly, easy to understand description of the childhood and careers of five American Indian scientists. The colorful pictures of these scientists, their Native homelands and work environments lend interest to the reading.
